Smash! #10 Comic


‘Twas was the time of Christmas.

So every game ran away from Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Assassins Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2’s private holiday party, making January a really crowded month, while Capcom pushed their stuff back a full quarter.

It was published back in February 2010, one month later and this comic would be totally out of date! Like now!

Sadly, it’s the only thing I did for this issue so here are larger versions of each panel!

These two illustrations were for an article in November 2009’s issue of Smash!

It was about the confusion in console models at the time, when their manufacturers would constantly add or remove features. The PlayStation 3 was portrayed as a sinking ship, while the Xbox 360 was a jigsaw puzzle.

I also made two comics for this issue. At the time my comic would appear on the satire section of the magazine, when the Smash! staff asked me to move my comic to the magazine’s starting pages. So I decided to draw an additional comic instead.

In October 2009, I started working for a new Portuguese video game magazine called «Smash!».

I would receive commissions for comics, illustrations, and even articles.

The illustration above was for an make-believe article that had the three big shots at Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo would have a huge argument in a meeting.

This issue’s comic was about celebrating the release of The Beatles: Rock Band. 2009 Finalists Expo Website

Web Design

Back in July 2009 I was asked to build a simple gallery website to display selected work from all the graduating students, from the Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha.

A small team of designers was in charge of the whole look of the printed catalog, posters and so on. I was handed a sketch of the website and the design was quickly decided.

I used and modified the aspect of this open-source jQuery lightBox plugin for the gallery, and a custom made javascript to select between two CSS files, so that the website would look the same on every browser.

This website is still available at its original address, but that server doesn’t have any kind of cache, so all of the seamless transitions are gone.



The first console I ever worked on!

My friend Tiago Franco and I made this weird thing in about 3 days, using an Arduino and Processing, for a school project.

PONG44 is a Pong clone where you can only play with 4 players. Each player moves the paddle with a special controller that uses a light sensor. More light moves a paddle in one direction, while less light moves it in the opposite one. It’s possible to stop the paddle by having just the right amount of light hitting the sensor.

Since light wasn’t a stable factor, each controller had to be calibrated on the spot, by finding the minimum and maximum light values. The rest is calculated automatically.

This whole rig was put together for the Finalists Expo back in July of 2009 at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha.

“Atario” was a bad wordplay between “Atari” and “otário”, which means “sucker” in Portuguese. And Caldas da Rainha is all about the ceramic dongs, so we added some testis to the Atari logo just for giggles.

The Mason Vs. The Cement Buckets

This is from a videogame mock-up for a school project, that came from a old unused idea for a gamedev competition.

In 20XX, all the cement buckets are automated to help out masons, but one day something went wrong and all the robot buckets went on a killing spree! You’re the last of the masons at your construction site and you’re the only one capable to climb up the building and destroy the buckets control antenna!

At the final floor, an epic final boss battle would ensue, with lightning and heavy rain, as the remaining buckets form a mega bucket!

RoboCop Trailer


About two years ago I was tasked with remaking a movie trailer and I chose one of my favorites of all time, the first RoboCop movie.

The original trailers were long, spoiled some plot points and were a bit boring, so I tried to make something within today’s momentum – starts with a bang, then there’s a bit of mystery when you don’t completely see the hero, and it goes into an action blowout with a promising cliffhanger.

I used footage from a standard DVD edition, which unfortunately didn’t have the best picture quality.
